Birds & Wild-life
Bird habitats vary from field and stream to coast and mountain.
Within just a few miles of the Woodhouse Hotel it is possible to visit a varied and extreme range of bird and wildlife habitats. Lush meadows and woods that are warmed throughout the year by the gulf stream, contrast with wild moorland and mountain habitats. In between these extremes are the coastal habitats of beach, pebble shore, rocky headlands, marsh and sand dunes.
Consequently without taking into account birds on passage it is not difficult to find 80 species including hen harriers and ring ouzels down to diminutive warblers, whilst the proximity of the sea and Ailsa Craig provide spectacular insights into some of the world’s largest seabird colonies. Not surprisingly the RSPB is active within the area and have a visitor centre and nearby Castle Semple Loch and a hen harrier nest viewing facility at Muirshiel Country Centre.
