Walking & Cycling
There are many fine walks in around Largs and the North Ayrshire coast. Hills and glens abound and the walking, coupled with some of the finest scenery in the country are to be enjoyed in practically any direction. Coastal paths suitable for walking or cycling lead all the way to Girvan, some 50+ miles down the coast, whilst a short ferry ride takes you to Cumbrae, where you can hire bikes and cycle around the island at your own pace, taking in the wonderful vistas and wildlife.
Arran, Isle of Bute and Great Cumbrae have stunning round the coast rides varying from 65 miles on Arran to 11 miles round Great Cumbrae. Cycle hire is also available on both islands and also Largs. For many an added bonus is the return ferry journey from the mainland with the opportunity to see whales, dolphins and porpoises in season.
Arran hills rival the Cuillin and the Alps for rugged grandeur and whilst they have demanding rock climbs and hillwalks the ridges and hills paths provide entertaining walks with fantastic panoramas on all sides. However the hills around Largs are maybe small but the summits are remote and very demanding of navigation skills and stamina. Here you can walk for 25 miles in a straight line and not cross a road. Similarily local mountain bikers have developed long distance routes through the moors and along the coast and you will not be short of downhill descents that are wild untamed and demanding of the best. However the Seven Stanes mountain bike tracks are reckoned to be the best in the UK and can all be easily reached by car from Largs.
